Letter or Spirit of the Law...

Over the past two weeks I have been thinking about a question... Which is Better Spirit of the Law or Letter of the Law... I have been asking other missionaries the question... the missionaries seem to be divided right down the middle... Because as missionaries we are faced with alot of challenges... to were we have to choose Letter of the Law or Spirit of the Law... for example in the office people would come up to the car that were very poor... asking for money... we have a Rule as missionaries do not give money out.... but what would one mil hurt really...Jesus taught to help the needy... Letter of the Law or Spirit of the Law...  as a mission we are not allowed to drink Coke... and we have the rule to respect the members and do not offend them... Alot of times missionaries come to the situation... were an extreamly poor family pours coke into a glass... and sets it in front of you... what do you do...

 

I have been really pondering that question Letter of the Law or spirit of the law...  i have been studying that question for the past two weeks finding examples in the bible and the book of mormon ...One being adam and Eve Adam had to partake of the Fruit in order to obey a commandment to have kids... but by partaking the fruit... he would be breaking another commandment... in my opinion he followed the Spirit of the law...

 

Nephi was commanded to kill laban... but by killing him he would be breaking another commandment Thou shalt not kill...

 

and going into conference i took that question in mind..... it was answered by Elder L Tom Perry and President Monson

 

I dont have my notes but what i do remember is that L Tom Perry (i think) said BODLY... GODS COMMANDMENTS DO NOT CHANGE...

I felt like i received my answer LETTER OF THE LAW...

 

Now we shouldnt be like the Pharasies and obey the law just to be seen by men... but we should obey them because we know that god will bless un and that we will be happy when we do so...

 

This Tuesday we are going to have interviews with President and so i think i will ask him if my conclusion is Correct or not...
